"Paweł Kulczyński recorded Biosignatures up and down the Wisła river in Warsaw, Poland, using electromagnetic sensors and hydrophones as well as more traditional microphones. He explores the relationship between the natural and the man-made in the context of the climate emergency, and the songs are appropriately harrowing. On “Walking on Eggshells,” crunching ice tumbles into roiling water and dissonant blasts boom overhead, while on “Anticipatory Grief” birds and sirens compete to be heard. Like a soundtrack to the end of the world, everything from insects to city infrastructure is connected in a nightmarish tableau that dramatizes the dystopian changes we have seen and are yet to see."

Field recordings collected along the banks and bridges of Wisła river in Warsaw, including utilizing electromagnetic or seismographic sensors and hydrophones, serve as the foundation for this album. It spans from presentation of modestly altered recordings to highly processed audio or data-driven sound synthesis and everything in between. From far-away urban soundscapes to micro-sounds produced by flowing water, from ice and vegetation to birds, amphibians, and insects, all the way up to electromagnetic noise of city infrastructure and heavy bridge resonances. The album "Biosignatures" is due to be released this Autumn by Pointless Geometry label.
Album jest elementem cyklu kompozycji eksplorujących pogranicza oraz zależności audiosfery rozlewającej się cywilizacji ludzkiej i adaptującego się świata naturalnego w kontekście kryzysu klimatycznego. Bazą tej edycji są nagrania terenowe powstałe wokół i wzdłuż warszawskiego odcinka Wisły i jej mostów, w tym z użyciem hydrofonów i sejsmografu oraz czujników fal elektromagnetycznych. Prezentowane są zarówno rejestracje niewiele przetworzone, jak i w formie dalece zmodyfikowanej, służą też do syntezy opartej na danych z nich wywiedzionych. Od odległych miejskich krajobrazów o różnych porach roku, przez mikro-dźwięki szemrzącej wody, kruszejącego lodu, aktywności ptaków, płazów i owadów, ku elektromagnetycznemu hałasowi miejskiej infrastruktury i rezonansom wielkich mostów. Album "Biosignatures" zostanie wydany jesienią nakładem wytwórni Pointless Geometry.
1 Walking on Eggshells
The eastern river bank of the Wisła river is wild, with trees that have fallen due to beaver activity, in some places being inundated. In one place, there is a pair of dead trunks leaning parallel to the surface, yet still firmly rooted in the bank. The flow of the river is fast because of its narrowing, funnel-like shape around the small islet. The ice is forming rapidly in rotating, clashing clusters, making the plates bigger as they gather smaller particles at the edges. A couple of 10-meter tree trunks, bare-stripped of bark, are acting like turntable needles, violently crushed in by the ice, either drowning the wooden barrier or going under and being scratched by it. The noise is so intense, as wood resonates depending on its size, hence the colorful palette, crackling with delicate ice-shimmering around. When a bigger piece hits, the whole ground shakes via the tree roots that are still firmly attached. This is a powerful experience of nature's dynamics, a very tactile representation of climate processes that affect all of us, here an increasingly rare phenomenon of the frozen Wisła river.
Praski brzeg Wisły na wysokości Golędzinowa jest dziki, okresowo zalewany, często ze skarpą porośniętą drzewami, które są sukcesywnie podcinane przez bobry. Jednocześnie nurt podmywa korzenie, wskutek czego szereg pni w różnych stadiach ożywienia pochylonych jest niemal równolegle do powierzchni wody, zanurzając się coraz bardziej, wreszcie niknąc w toni. Prąd jest tam szybki ze względu na zwężający się kształt bocznej odnogi, oddzielonej szeregiem wysepek. Gdy rzeka zamarza, tworzący się lód uderza w pochylone pnie, z efektem zależnym od czasu, temperatury i wielkości grud - od szumiących kaszkowatych drobinek, przez rosnące tarczki, do wielkich, kilkumetrowych płyt niemalże łamiących drzewa. Gdy powierzchnia lodu utwardza się i stabilizuje, część pni zaczyna ją skrobać z wielkim łoskotem niczym gramofonowe igły, w przejściowych stadiach często wpychanych ciężarem pod wodę, by potem z pluskiem wydobyć się na powrót. Huk jest intensywny, drzewa rezonują w zależności rozmiaru, dodatkowo miękki brzeg basowo drży pod stopami, w nim bowiem głęboko tkwią korzenie targanych wodą i lodem drzew.
2 Hobo's Dream
The foundation and material of the piece "Hobo's Dream" are recordings of the Grota-Roweckiego bridge and its immediate surroundings, where I spent a lot of time in various weather conditions. Although it may not seem like a particularly friendly place, it offers a range of attractive stimuli that can be captured electromagnetically. In addition to traditional microphones, I used very sensitive magnetic field recorders and a low-frequency sensor based on seismograph, for which the entire steel structure of the bridge is a large and singing resonant system with many nodes. On the other hand, the electromagnetic waves emitted by vehicles have a bird-insect temperament, especially hybrid and electric vehicles with very clear tones. The piece is made up of two 6-channel layers of field recordings, each recorded simultaneously, consisting of two tracks of electromagnetic sensors (high, singing tones), a low-frequency element of the seismograph, and 3 tracks of audio microphones. All of this is subject to a complex sound correction and modulated effects.
Bazą i tworzywem utworu "Hobo's Dream" są nagrania mostu Grota-Roweckiego i jego bezpośredniej okolicy, spędziłem tam sporo czasu w różnych okolicznościach pogodowych. Choć pozornie nie jest to miejsce szczególnie przyjazne, to oferuje szereg atrakcyjnych bodźców dających się uchwycić elektromagnetycznie. Oprócz tradycyjnych mikrofonów zastosowałem bardzo czułe rejestratory pola magnetycznego oraz niskoczęstotliwościowy czujnik bazujący na sejsmografie, dla którego cała stalowa konstrukcja mostu jest wielkim i śpiewającym systemem rezonansowym o wielu węzłach. Z kolei fale elektromagnetyczne emitowane przez pojazdy mają temperament ptasio-owadzi, przy czym podejrzewam hybrydy i elektryczne o szczególnie jawne tony. W utworze nałożone są dwie 6 kanałowe warstwy nagrań terenowych, każda zarejestrowana symultanicznie, składające się z dwóch śladów czujników elektromagnetycznych (wysokie, śpiewne tony), niskotonowego elementu sejsmografu, oraz 3 śladów mikrofonów audio. Wszystko to poddane jest rozbudowanej korekcji brzmienia i modulowanym efektom.
3 Anticipatory Grief
The Wilanowska beach in Zawady during heavy April snowfall. The morning is still chilly and quite windy, a twenty-centimeter layer of snow makes it difficult to move around on the uneven sandy shore. The damp forest protects against the wind. Around noon, warm sun comes out, gusts of wind die down, and large snow caps slide off of the overloaded branches, everything drips, birds start singing, it's spring after all. The sounds of the distant city blend into harmoniously droning. Along the flood control embankment, a train with coal is heading to the Siekierki power plant.
Wilanowska plaża Zawady podczas obfitych, kwietniowych opadów śniegu. Poranek jest jeszcze mroźny, dosyć wietrzny, dwudziestocentymetrowa warstwa śniegu utrudnia poruszanie się po nierównym, piaszczystym nabrzeżu. Podmokły las chroni przed wiatrem. Około południa wychodzi ciepłe słońce, podmuchy cichną i wielkie czapy śniegu ześlizgują się z przeciążonych konarów, wszystko kapie, odzywają się ptaki, jest przecież wiosna. Odgłosy odległego miasta zlewają się w śpiewnie harmonizujące drony. Wzdłuż wału przeciwpowodziowego jedzie pociąg z węglem do elektrociepłowni Siekierki.
4 Anomalous Regularity
Continuation of the theme from the piece "Walking on Eggshells", another recording of trees battered by ice in Golędzinów, just one year later and with a large number of microphones and a seismographic transducer inserted into the shore. Different ice, different dynamics, different history. Here a short-lived frost, only a few days, then over a week."
Kontynuacja tematu z utworu Walking on Eggshells, kolejne nagranie targanych lodem drzew na Golędzinowie, tylko rok później oraz z dużą ilością mikrofonów oraz przetwornikiem sejsmograficznym wbitym w brzeg. Inny lód, inna dynamika, inna historia. Tu krótkotrwały mróz, kilka dni raptem, wtedy ponad tydzień.
5 Unpredictable Past
A scorching day in Zakole Wawerskie, Warsaw, late June, over 33 degrees in the shade, insects run wild, the water level in the Wisław River is low, kayakers are stuck near the shallows, no wind. It's unbearably hot, it's hard to move. Around a dried-out, stale pond among trees, already cut off from the main stream, with a shaky, reddish shore dotted with colorful pollen, birds and amphibians gather. The echo of this charming corner is excellent. Overlaid on this situation is a modulated recording of two drones racing, but from February, at minus 12 degrees.
Upalny dzień w Zakolu Wawerskim, późny czerwiec, ponad 33 stopnie w cieniu, owady szaleją, poziom wody w Wiśle niski, kajakarze grzęzną nieopodal w mule, brak wiatru. Jest nieznośnie gorąco, trudno się poruszać. Wokół podeschłego, zatęchłego bajorka pośród drzew, odciętego już od głównego nurtu, o grząskim, rudawym brzegu poprążkowanym kolorowymi pyłkami, gromadzą się ptaki i płazy. Znakomity jest pogłos tego urokliwego zakątka. Na tę sytuację nałożone jest modulowane nagranie dwóch ścigających się dronów, ale z lutego, przy minus 12 stopniach.
